MVG Productions & Theatre on the Square present two new South African plays by Award Winning Playwright MIKE VAN GRAAN
– THE NEW ABNORMAL with Nhlanhla Shabangu, directed by Khutjo Green
and
– COUNTRY DUTY with Khutjo Green, directed by Fiona Ramsay

THE NEW ABNORMAL, scathingly humorous commentary about South Africa’s pandemics both real and metaphorical and COUNTRY DUTY which highlights the many trials and few triumphs of the country’s heroic whistleblowers, will premiere at Sandton’s Theatre on the Square as a double-header from 25th May to 11th June.

Written by Mike van Graan (Green Man Flashing, Pay Back the Curry, State Fracture, Land Acts) whose Return of the Ancestors is up for a Naledi Theatre Award in the Best New Script category adding to his previous seven nominations in this category THE NEW ABNORMAL and COUNTRY DUTY are both one-person shows.

“The ongoing and non-sensical 50% limitations on theatre audiences have necessitated a response that both makes some theatre economically viable and provides actors with a possible source of income even in the harshest lockdown conditions,”
said Van Graan.

THE NEW ABNORMAL will introduce the twenty-three-year-old AFDA graduate, Nhlanhla Shabangu, to mainstream theatre audiences. His intellect and abundance of natural charm make him the perfect vehicle for a script that uses the COVID-19 pandemic as a springboard for humorous catharsis for a South African public that is going through a lot!

The well-known television actor, Khutjo Green, directs Shabangu and then also features in COUNTRY DUTY, a piece that provides insights into the lives of, and helps to humanise the courageous whistleblowers who suffer greatly for exposing the corruption and thievery epidemic that has plagued our lives for more than two decades.

Directing Green in her first one-person show is stage veteran and one of South Africa’s finest performers, Fiona Ramsay, who is herself no stranger to one-person shows.
