René van Rooyen’s adaptation of award-winning writer Dalene Matthee’s 2003 top-selling novel, TOORBOS will be in movie theatres nationwide from 13 November 2020. Because TOORBOS is a such an enchanting cinematic experience, the producers and distributors felt it was necessary to wait until audiences could experience films on the big screen again.

With breathtaking images and thrilling cinematography, TOORBOS – based on the fourth novel of Matthee’s successful series of forest stories – is an overwhelming love drama. The film tells the story of Karoliena Kapp, a woman with an intimate love for and connection to the forest. TOORBOS is produced by the award-winning filmmaker, André Scholtz and his son, Dries Scholtz of The Film Factory, under the guidance of René van Rooyen, scriptwriter and director of the movie.

TOORBOS investigates the uprooting of a young forest woman during the time of the final forest dwellers in the South African Knysna forests of the 1930s. It is the story of Karoliena Kapp, a consecrated forest woman’s intimate connection with the tree heart of the forest. However, when she meets the man of her dreams, this very enchantment with the forest results in a love triangle that threatens to destroy her when she must choose between marrying and moving to town, or staying behind in the place where she feels safe. The decisions she makes, lead to an unforgettable adventure of inner conflict, change, acceptance and, above all, love.

We follow Karoliena as she commits to a marriage with Johannes Stander, is overwhelmed by the realities of a self-directed, money-hungry society and its suppression, and experiences what it will demand of her to stay true to herself.

The Film Factory spearheads the production of TOORBOS and the film is distributed by Filmfinity (Pty) Ltd. The cast includes Elani Dekker, Stiaan Smith, Ira Blanckenberg, Clare Marshall, Ivan Abrahams, Gretschen Ramsden, among others – with Brendan Barnes as cinematographer.
