Theatre on the Square proudly presents its first production of the year, SPANISH STEPS by Gavin Werner, a new South African play. The production is directed by Caroline Rix-Midgley, and stars well known actress Dianne Simpson and Gavin Werner.

The season runs from the 13th to the 24th of February 2024.

SPANISH STEPS is a coming-of-middle-aged comedy-drama that promises to take audiences on an unforgettable journey through the intricacies of the human condition.
In a unique narrative, the play involves two unlikely colleagues, Maureen, an uptight corporate executive with daddy issues, and Barry, her underachieving employee going through a messy divorce, who find themselves trapped in a basement. The situation forcing them to confront their differences and dive into each other’s lives.

As the two grapple with the unhappy prospect of spending the foreseeable future in close quarters, a fraught interaction ensues, triggering their deepest issues. The play skillfully forces the two to become mirrors, reflecting each other’s blind spots, unraveling a tale of self-discovery, humour and unexpected connections.

The confined setting becomes a stage for tensions to rise, leaving audiences on the edge of their seats, questioning whether cantankerous Maureen and Barry will push each other over the edge or if they’ll help each other become unstuck.

SPANISH STEPS promises laughter, introspection, and a unique perspective on a heartwarming journey of self-discovery.

It is set to captivate audiences with its witty script, stellar performances and a narrative that transcends the boundaries of conventional storytelling.

Fresh from a successful run at the Baxter Theatre Cape Town and at the National Arts Festival, SPANISH STEPS opens at the Theatre On The Square, Sandton from 13-24 February, 2024.
Performances are at 7:30pm nightly during the week and 4pm for matinees on Saturdays or at 8pm.
