The Market Theatre is preparing to end the year on a theatrical and musical high note, with its final three productions appealing to a variety of tastes. The last shows for 2015 will be Songs from Jazztown, Noise and The Return of Elvis du Pisanie
Noise is an internationaly acclaimed gritty drama by Alex Jones, now being directed by Dorothy Ann Gould and due to run from November 13 to December 06. It promises a moving, sometimes challenging evening for appreciators of true-life drama.
The Return of Elvis du Pisanie by Paul Slabolepszy is a funny yet poignant piece of theatre that touches on lost memories and unfulfilled hopes, all delivered by the brilliant actor Lionel Newton, and running from November 25 to December 13.
On a lighter note, jazz lovers will be well entertained by the return of Songs From Jazztown, a musical evening celebrating great artists of the past. The production premiered in the Eastern Cape with support from the Department of Arts and Culture Touring Venture Fund, and performed in four venues chosen for their contribution to the arts in their communities. It received a great reception by tapping into the old sound that was such a hit in the 50s.
Now it’s been given a modern twist to bring the old favourites back to life for a more modern audience, by the inclusion of new recording artists with amazing voices and a distinctly hip hop slant to evolution of popular music.
The Market Theatre’s artisic director James Ngcobo has revitalised Songs From Jazztown by changing the previous format of having actors narrating the story. Now the hip hop artists will take up the role of storytelling in the show, bringing a lively new element to the piece and encouraging young audiences to come to the theatre to discover the joy of classic pieces presented in new way.
Some of the legendary musicians whose songs will be featured in this end-of-year musical celebration will be Dolly Rathebe, Mirriam Makeba, Gibson Kente and many more. The singers performing these classic numbers will include the angelic-voiced Asanda Bam, who will be making her debut at the Market Theatre, along with the delightful singers Gugu Shezi, Tshepiso Mashego and Nomfundo Dlamini.
Songs Of Jazztown will be performed at the Market Theatre from November 17 to December 20, making it an ideal event for corporate party bookings!
