Lauded by critics as “powerfully unsettling” and “enormously moving,” Warren Leight’s Tony Award-winning Side Man is a brilliant memory play that pulses with the rhythm of a struggling jazz musician’s life.

Told through the eyes of the protagonist, Clifford, the narrative shifts effortlessly between past and present, blending poignant family drama with unexpected comedy. It is a rich, nostalgic look back at a golden era “when jazzmen were heroic like ballplayers and there was no shortage of Saturday-night gigs,” beautifully capturing the heartbreak, the humor, and the harmony of a family caught in the fading echoes of American jazz.

Side Man is directed by Jaco van Wyk with musical direction by Monde Msutswana. The cast includes the talent of both the St Alban’s College Drama and Music Departments in collaboration with St Augustine’s, and features guest artists Inge Crafford-Lazarus and Cara Meiring. Set and lighting design by Wilhelm Disbergen, with costumes from designer Gwendi Botha-Gourley.

Runs from 13 – 14 May at The SA State Theatre.
