I’m never quite sure what to expect from an improvisation show. It can either go horribly wrong or exceptionally well.
Megan Furniss, possibly Cape Town’s longest running improviser, is currently presenting a brand new improvisation show – Two Parrots and a Sandcastle – at the Alexander Bar and Theatre Café in Cape Town.
It’s a limited run of three shows, and each night Furniss is joined by another fellow improviser. They perform an hour long, two-hander improvisation show, with absolutely nothing planned and where anything can happen.
Going back to the first statement I made, I can confidently say the show turned out splendidly. During this performance Tandi Buchan was accompanied by Furniss and the two had an instant chemistry. The sketches were completely made up on the spot and suggestions from the audience were incorporated.
Both Furniss and Buchan had impeccable intuition in a space where the next move was often uncertain. Their lines were witty and it’s incredible to think they made them up on the spot. They portrayed their characters with such conviction and their creativity was inspiring; from two humans who fled earth and now find themselves in space, to two ladies fighting it out in court over their pigs.
It’s nearly impossible to predict what future audience can expect, but one thing is for certain, with Furniss at the helm of it, there will be loads of laughter, a tear or two and ncredible energy with bursts of creativity.
