EMERGER was formed by Emma de Goede (lead vocalist/pianist), and Gerry Matthee (producer/multi-instrumentalist), who met in High School. After completing their respective BMus degrees at UCT, they decided to bring their jazz and classical backgrounds together to create this “Dreamy, synth-driven melodies, cinematic progressions, powerful pop vocals, and punchy beats” alt-pop duo group.

They debuted their 8-track mini-album, “Bloom” in May of 2018 and soon after the release, Apple Music showcased EMERGER as their New Artist Spotlight, featuring their songs on prominent playlists on the streaming platform, including Apple Music’s Best of 2018 playlist.

They have just released their latest single ‘Round We Go’ accompanied with a music video.

The song chronicles the creative process and all of its intricacies. Everything involved with the creation of a work of art has so many layers of complexities, which we feel a lot of people have taken for granted” shares Matthee

The song starts with a strong synth sounding note and drum beat, which begins this journey through the creative process.
With her very clear, smooth vocals, De Goede’s voice compliments this sound, without overpowering it, blending in perfectly with the harmonies of the keyboard, percussion, strings and backing vocals of Matthee.

The lyrics are smart and thought provoking
“Starts off with one idea/Tame at first But then it evolves to/
One million thoughts for every hour…”

Claiming a strong 80s influence in their up and coming album, this song and the style of this duo, remind me of groups like 80s groups’ Berlin, Propaganda, AHA, Boy George, even Duran Duran, and the later 90s dance group, Moloko.

This is a very tightly written, produced, mixed and mastered track and of a very high standard.
I was pleasantly surprised and I believe this group will blow up even more.
It is also a pleasure to be able to hear the lyrics clearly and the catchy melody lingers on in my head long after I’ve listened to the song.

The music video is fun and compliments the theme; starting off with sounds of a city – the noise and distractions that impede the creative process.

Multi-instrumentalist Matthee is amazing to watch as he moves from keyboard to bass, to guitar, while harmonising…
The two are very stylised and I love their image.
They have thought of everything; from their sound, writing, look and image.

The video for ‘Round We Go’ was directed by De Goede.
Being immersed within a tank of thousands of lights, the video portrays how the creative process can be all-encompassing.”

Goddy Roodt, owner of Polycat animation and visual effects studio, exhibited his Light Tank art installation at the 99 Loop Gallery, which was the setting for the music video.

Cinematographer, Hugo Brand, who had previously worked on music videos for South African stalwarts, including Francois van Coke and Die Heuwels Fantasties was brought in to add the final touches.

This duo is the perfect music team, they are clearly very thoughtful in their song writing and the concept behind the song and video is original and refreshing. Bringing in Dane Taylor to mix and master the track was a great idea – it is always wise to have an extra set of ears to tweak the finishing touches of a song.

I love this track so much that I sent it to the team of Discover Media Digital, who have now placed it on rotation on their sister stations; London FM, Bafana FM, New York FM, American21 and Electro 24.
