District nightclub in Cape Town’s CBD was set ablaze in the late hours of Saturday, 14 December, when DJ Gremlin was crowned the top partyrocker DJ in the national finals of the Red Bull 3Style competition.
The night started off in a sombre mood with DJ Kixi kicking off the music with a mix of lo-fi beats and chilled lounge music as music fans made their way into District. The venue is setup between two other venues in Harrington street, making for quite a different experience as you can go between all three as you wish throughout the night, but District was the place to be. The Red Bull and vodka was flowing plus the introduction of Red Bull Coconut edition and rum on the menu which pleased many party-goers on the night.
Next up was local legend Ready D! No none can dispute that Ready D is the mix and scratch master of South Africa and he took the crowd through, which somewhat was, a workshop on his techniques that he uses to entertain audiences. The coolest part of the setup was that there was a camera mounted above the DJ decks which showcased the techniques the DJs use to everyone in attendance across one massive LED screen. After a quick set, Hedspin, 2011 3Style global champion took the decks to get the audience warmed up for the official competition between 6 of South Africa’s top DJs.
Each DJ had 15 minutes to impress an audience and the judges, which consisted of Ready D, Hedspin and DJ Espinosa (the current 3Style world champion), with their mixes which needed to sample at least three different music genres. The sets were judged on skill, music selection, originality and overall crowd response. The competition was extremely tough and the DJs all brought their A-game. DJ Gremlin won the competition by his insane mix of tracks that ranged from old classics to the newest tracks that are making waves worldwide.
When DJ Gremlim was announed the winner, the audience erupted to a well deserved win for the Plumstead DJ. “This was my third time entering Red Bull 3Style and I finally won it. I am very excited and happy to be representing my country in Russia next year. Thank you to everyone that supported me,” said DJ Gremlin.
DJ Gremlin will be jetting off to Moscow in April 2020 to represent South Africa at the world finals alongside the best on the planet. After the awards, DJ. Espinosa entertained the audience into the wee hours of Sunday morning keeping Harrington street in Cape Town alive with the biggest party on the night in the mother city.
We wish DJ Gremlin all the best when he goes to Moscow in April and look forweard to seeing how he does and hopefully brings back the crown to South Africa creating another world champion!
