Melville Turns 130: Community Invited to Help Shape a Historic Celebration
One of Johannesburg’s oldest and most iconic suburbs marks 130 years this October, and it is calling on residents, artists, businesses and former Melvillians around the world to help build it.

One of Johannesburg’s most iconic suburbs is preparing to celebrate a remarkable milestone. On October 5, 2026, Melville turns 130 years old, and a coalition of residents, businesses, artists, community organisations and local stakeholders has begun planning a celebration worthy of the suburb’s rich history, creative spirit and unique character.

Representatives from the Melville Business Association, Melville Security Initiative, Melville Art Mile, Melville Koppies, Melville Residents’ Association, the Melville Artisanal Market, local businesses and community groups recently met to begin shaping what is envisioned as a community-wide celebration running from 1 to 3 October 2026.

Planned activities currently include:

A special Melville Art Mile launch event
A special Saturday opening of the Melville Koppies, with a heritage hike
A pedestrianised 7th Street celebration
Art, music and cultural activations
Historical storytelling projects
Community exhibitions and experiences
Central to the celebration is a new initiative called My Melville Memories, inviting people from around the world who have lived, worked, studied, created, performed or simply spent time in Melville to share their stories, photographs and memories. A dedicated submission portal will open in the coming weeks.

Call for Contributors. The organising team is inviting artists, musicians, storytellers, historians, photographers, writers, community organisations and volunteers to become part of the celebration.

Call for Sponsors and Partners. Businesses, residents and organisations interested in supporting Melville 130 through sponsorship, funding, services or partnerships are encouraged to get involved. The organisers believe that by working together, Melville 130 can become one of Johannesburg’s most memorable community celebrations.
