Intervals is a progressive metal band from Canada. They became purely instrumental in late 2013. The band has released two EPs, The Space Between (2011) and In Time (2012), and released its debut album (featuring vocals) A Voice Within on March 4th, 2014, which was followed by the instrumental album ‘The Shape of Colour’ in 2015.

Intervals will be coming to South Africa for the KRANK’D UP Festival.

We spoke to Founder and Current Member, Aaron Marshall.

When you first formed Intervals what was your motivation and intention for the group?

Aaron:

“There was really no conscious goal at all. The first Intervals song I wrote was the first piece of music I had fully composed on my own and I had no intention or plan for it at all. A friend of mine convinced me to shoot a “play through” video for it, (which wasn’t common at the time), and that video started to make some waves online. I basically started trying to catch up to it from there.”

What made you decide on the band being an all instrumental group – from Interval’s inception until now there has always been this grapple between whether it should be with or without vocals?

Aaron:

“In the early days, I never ruled out the potential of a vocalist. I think part of being “progressive” is creating with an open mind and taking chances. When the opportunity presented itself, I deliberated quite a bit and inevitably gave it a shot. I’m very proud of that record, but it also showed me that Intervals, at the heart and soul, is about the music through and through. The only grappling with that notion happened before it was committed to, but since then, it’s very clear how everything is supposed to go. The Shape of Colour solidified that for me.”

Why do you think people responded positively to you last album, which cemented Intervals as an instrumental group?

Aaron:

“I can only speculate, but perhaps it’s because its very clear that it was an honest body of work that truly represented me and my headspace at the time. My day 1 fans have always appreciated the music first and foremost, and The Shape Of Colour was the largest dose of guitar-centric music I had released to date.”

How has the writing changed over the years; besides for the full, only instrumental sound taking preference finally?

Aaron:

“It’s actually always been relatively based around the same process. I jam initial ideas and flesh them out into songs. Things evolve in stages from there on, but in every instance of Intervals, that has always been the congruent process for writing.”

You have toured with incredible bands – what has been a career highlight for you?

Aaron:

“I have and I am incredibly grateful for that. I think touring all of North America and Europe with Animals As Leaders last year may take the cake. Everything holds equal weight and value in my mind though.”

Any new material that you are working on at the moment?

Aaron:

“The new album is complete! It’s currently being mixed. I’m actually out on tour with Northlane and Invent, Animate currently and we’ve been performing three new songs from it. I can’t wait to put this one out.”

What can South Africans expect at the KRANK’D UP Festival?

Aaron:

“A high energy performance with an assortment of songs from The Shape Of Colour, some older, and some new!”

What are you looking forward to the most?

Aaron:

“I’m looking forward to releasing this new record and everything the new cycle holds in store. Onwards, always.”
