Chelsea Grin was formed in 2007 by Alex Koehler and former band mates under the name Ahaziah. They have released two EPs and four full-length albums.

The band’s first members were Alex Koehler, guitarist Chris Kilbourn, bassist Austin Marticorena and lead guitarist Michael Stafford. Marticorena introduced Andrew Carlston to Chelsea Grin. The band later sought to obtain a third guitarist position which led to Dan “Niglet” Jones joining the group.

The band are coming to South Africa for one show only.

Chelsea Grin has taken on many forms since its inception – how would you describe the band as it stands and its message, and song writing?

Alex Koehler:

“We’ve always tried to further ourselves as musicians. Sometimes we get carried away and put out a song that’s not very “death core”, but for the most part I’d describe our band as pretty freakin heavy – haha.”

What’s the story behind the name Chelsea Grin?

Alex Koehler:

“It kind of just came to us one day. Kind of like when the light bulb appears above a cartoon character. We knew immediately that it was perfect.”

The band has undergone many changes, you have had many incredible experiences as well – any one particular moment that stands out for you?

Alex Koehler:

“The fact that we get to travel the world in general has always been an awesome feeling.”

Which song of yours best defines the band now and why?

Alex Koehler:

“Probably Skin Deep. It’s aggressive and heavy. That was the tone we set for the last album.”

What sparked the idea to come to South Africa?

Alex Koehler:

“We were lucky enough to get an offer to play a show and we took it without hesitation. I’m really excited about it.”

Take me through a live performance – what can people expect?

Alex Koehler:

“Expect a really raw and aggressive show. A lot of moshing, bouncing, and running around in circles – haha.”

What are you looking forward to the most in visiting South Africa?

Alex Koehler.:

“I’m just excited to see what it’s like really. I also want to see some wildlife.”

Your last album was released last year – are the band working on any more/new material?

Alex Koehler:

“We are currently working on new stuff right now! Can’t wait to release a new album.”
