One of the most successful and beloved musicals in theatrical history, CATS, arrives in Johannesburg from 17 January to 22 February 2026 at The Teatro, Montecasino.

Featuring Andrew Lloyd Webber’s iconic score – including the unforgettable “Memory” – alongside breathtaking choreography, dazzling costumes and an extraordinary oversized junkyard set, CATS promises a spectacular theatrical experience for audiences of all ages.

Adapted from T.S. Eliot’s Old Possum’s Book of Practical Cats, the musical first premiered in London in 1981, where it ran for a record-breaking 21 years. Since then, it has been seen by more than 77 million people worldwide, staged in 54 countries, and translated into 23 languages.

The South African season is presented by Pieter Toerien and GWB Entertainment, by arrangement with The Really Useful Group, in association with Cape Town Opera. The production retains the original creative team’s vision, with design by John Napier, choreography by the late Gillian Lynne, and direction by Trevor Nunn.

Audiences can look forward to a stellar local cast led by Cindy Ann Abrahams as Grizabella, King B as Old Deuteronomy, Dylan Janse van Rensburg as Rum Tum Tugger and Che-Jean Jupp as Munkustrap, alongside an outstanding ensemble of South African performers.

Set on one magical night at the Jellicle Ball, CATS follows the Jellicle Cats as they gather to witness Old Deuteronomy choose which cat will ascend to the Heaviside Layer and be reborn into a new life.

With its timeless music, spectacular sets and inspired choreography, CATS remains one of the most celebrated and enduring musicals of all time.
