Daphne Kuhn is very proud to produce and present for the first time, a riveting and timeless play written in 1978 by famous English playwright, HAROLD PINTER. Betrayal will open with preview on the 6th June at the Auto & General Theatre on the Square and run till the 1st July with an exciting local cast. The play is critically regarded as Pinter’s finest dramatic work. Audiences have shown it to be a highly popular work of contemporary world-drama. Since its first staging, Betrayal has won several major awards, including the Olivier Award for Best New Play and the New York Drama Critics’ Circle Award.
Betrayal is a deceptively simple, poignant, and, at times, funny love-triangle play. It examines the decline of a marriage starting from the point when Jerry initiates an affair with his best friend’s wife, Emma. The play backtracks nine years all the way to when the affair first began. As the years spin backwards, a complex web of secrets about the trio emerges and calls into question the nature of their intimacy – as friends, as partners, as spouses. The play examines relationships, love, lust and time, poetically exploring the rift between memory and reality. Inspired by Pinter’s own clandestine extramarital affair, the plot of Betrayal integrates different permutations of betrayal. It also shows that the very capacity for love itself is sometimes based on betraying not only other loved ones, but even ourselves. The play also highlights Pinter’s particular innovative penchant for the use of reverse chronology.
The theatre is thrilled to announce the brilliant cast after a series of intense auditions. Award-winning stage and screen actor, Antony Coleman (recent winner of the SAFTA for Best Actor for High Rollers) will play the husband, Robert; vivacious, versatile and talented performer, Carly Graeme is cast as Emma; Film and TV actor, Tom Fairfoot is back on stage playing Jerry; and popular actor Jose Domingos will play the waiter. Greg Homann, Standard Bank Award Winning Young Director for Theatre (2014) has assembled the team which also includes Oliver Hauser, as the lighting designer.
